    It's unbelievable that people have problems with this toilet. We have two in our home and they perform flawlessly and save us quite a bit on water bills. I can only think of DIY install error, buying the cheapest online knockoff replacement seal, or your water having chemical or minerals that break down the seal prematurely. As to the so called benefit of converting to a flush valve that holds more water in the tank for better performance that's crazy. The 3 gallon tank toilets previously in our home clogged on occasion but the new American Standard 1.28 has never done that in the 7 years we had them. Maybe more people like to complain about a product than people who say nothing positive when it gives them no issue. Lastly the seal is so easy to replace and not expensive, covered by AS warrantee, plus the money saved on water bills a little upkeep won't kill you. All toilets have seals, learn to replace yours and get on with a happy life.

      @@dalemihocik4732 The toilets were installed by a license plumber. I never paid any attention to them until I began to receive letters from the water dept in our municipality informing us that we were using a substantial about of water and even then I didn’t think there was an issue after testing every faucet in the house. A few months passed and I received another letter regarding over usage. It was only then that I paid more attention and listened to my wife when she said the toilets are running. That is when I noticed that there were bubbles around the flap. I turned the water supply off, waited a while and sure enough the water had drained out. I went to Home Depot where I had purchased them, they told me I should call the manufacturer. When I did and explained the problem they said they would send my new flaps without any question. I had difficulty installing them as they were a different design. I eventually figured it out and thought that was the end of it Unfortunately those toilet still run occasionally as the seal does not work properly. I have not called the manufacturer back but I will. I need to get this solved as I do nit want to buy new toilets and pay a few hundred dollars to have them installed. As for the seal, I think there could be a better design. Having said all that I appreciate you taking the time to write.

    £9:99 a month with Readly gets you a fantastic range of magazines to read online, the other problem with actual magazines is the quality of the paper has got steadily worse. Only magazine I actually buy is Automobilsport, a German magazine on historic car racing, they publish an English edition, the magazine is £15 but it's quarterly, so £5 a month in effect, the printing, binding and paper are top quality. I'd heartily recommend trying Readly.

    There are many reasons for the lack of innovation.: Rise in production charges due to taxes and fuel and import charges, Lack of new modellers in the hobby, Lack of space for the hobby, Lack of freely available cash for the hobby, Loss of the older hobby members due to age and/or health. Lack of available parts and equipment. UA-cam/social media means that individuals can bypass publishers and release their contact directly to followers.

    Gone are the days when I could afford a magazine. I did not mind 2/6 (12.5p) but at over £4 that is a rip-off in itself. The entire country is a rip off and the only times I can comfortably afford a train ride, even first class, (reduction without question for seniors) is in Europe.

    300 pounds for a WD 2-10-0 which in Australia would be about $675 and they wonder why people are looking more and more into the secondhand market. Today's new model railway market for locos, coaches and wagons is for the collector market not for those modelling unless you have more money than sense. Buy them never remove them from the box and sell them at a later date for double what you paid for it on a well known online site.

      Same in the other direction and that is why I rarely buy anything from the UK. I have been looking for Triang Hornby parts for some time but the cost of postage has been obscene to say the least. Fortunately I have relatives coming to Toronto so I have had them sent to Glasgow. Like yourself I have no explanation for the massive increase in postage; case in point is ebay. I think what occurred with them was , some unscrupulous buyers would tell ebay they did not receive the item and ebay were required to refund their purchase. As a result ebay insisted on insurance etc be added to the costs. At least that is what I have been told. Thanks so much for joining in. Cheers Charlie

    Maybe its the frugal nature of my Dutch roots, but paying $20 CAD for a magazine with newsprint paper is unthinkable to me. I bought a copy of Model Rail for a couple pounds at Heathrow airport before my journey back to Canada recently, I was drawn to the fact they advertised a review of the new hornby 'super' Black five which had me thinking a breakdown of the massive quality issues people have been having with it would make a good read. However I suppose Hornby must know the writing staff on a first name basis because they didn't even mention in passing that nobody can seem to run the thing, and gave it a "glowing report" Oh well, makes for a good picture book I suppose!

    Glossy vs newsprint - I suppose it depends on what you do with your magazine when you've read it. If you intend to keep it for ever, then the glossy, but if it is just thrown in the bin, the cheaper newsprint level is the one. Then, it could be the newsprint mag is lighter, therefore cheaper to probably air-freight out from the UK. - - - Buying new loco's - disregard the ridiculous price - you almost have to buy on the pre-order system, to be sure of getting one, because if you wait until the thing is released, they are almost always sold out! So you have to consider - as there is maybe a two year delay between placing the order and recieving the model, you have to think "Will I still BE here, then?" - and - "If it turns up after I've popped off, what will my family do with it?" - there's no denying that we're all getting older, and more prone to ailments and illnesses, so have to take that into consideration! - - - I have to add that I've not bought a railway magazine, except Heritage Rail - for a long time - the price got silly for something that I threw away after seeing that there was nothing of interest to me in it!

      Talking about Popping Off, that is another topic I had for a video a while back. Had an old friend/colleague originally from Cleathorpse. He built a 20x 30 ft layout and all his locos were purchased from Hatton’s or the odd one from a dealer here in Toronto. Unfortunately he passed away only a couple of years ago leaving his widow with a large collection of DC locos, coaches and wagons etc. A few years previously they had bought a cottage, renovated it including a new garage with a Railway room above- Perfect. I know he was making a catalogue but don’t think he finished it. I was asked to demolish the layout, a very sad experience. Cant tell you how important it is to catalogue your collection and what you would like done with it. Thanks for taking the time to post the comment. Cheers Charlie

    This is a sad video. About 10 weeks ago we observed our Rembrance day (not called that). It is in part about what it cost to preserve the rule of just law. Copyright law, tax law, and law in general matter; they super matter. Mike Jordan, below, many thanks. Vickie Lawless thinks 'mags are not as good as 10 years ago.' That is a big subject Vickie; the usual reasons are valid, but I doubt they figure as large as is usually believed. I am not going to say much more as that criticises where fairness would preclude, but perhaps the real difficulty is in maintaining a social context in a society which has less and less structure??? Let's all support at least one magazine, and if possible - write some articles. Go gently everyone.

      Thank you for this very well written note. Can I ask if you are an English Teacher or a Lawyer? Only yesterday I was listening to an article on CBC radio about the impact that Pirate software has had on the music industry. I think anyone who had access to a computer has downloaded music and videos without consideration to copyright laws. That is pretty much like someone going into your pay packet( yes I remember those days) and removing just a little bit. They won’t miss it or need it, what harm will it do? At our local Chapters book store there is a Starbucks and I would often go in and order a Mocha then pull a magazine and leaf through it. Like most other people on the store were doing.Was I stealing something? Well your honour, I am retired now and that coffee is expensive. Eventually signs went up stating, No books or magazines allowed in this area. The Starbucks has closed , maybe due to Covid and fewer people are reading the magazines. There isn’t a British Railway modelling shop in Toronto but there are a couple of guys within an hour or twos drive who sell stuff they have picked up from auction in the UK. However I do visit a Model Railroad store locally where I can find bits and pieces for modelling purposes . I also made a video of their store for UA-cam which garnered well over 1k views. Guilty as charged your Honour. Everything is changing, I can do a sketch if a car and run it through Ai and within less than a minute I receive a fully rendered perfect view which I could not produce on my own. When it first appeared a couple of years ago I jumped in and posted on my Instagram channel, I was surprised that some trained artists whom I know pointed out it wasn’t real art and in a way it was stealing. The algorithm from my written prompts would go and search through the internet finding anything related to my description and conjure up a fantastic looking drawing. I stopped using it for a while as a result but slowly things began to change, the technology has now been embraced by TV and the movies. The industry has changed and these concept artists now have another tool in their box. Thank you fir a very thought provoking post Regards Charlie

      @@charlie1872 Greetings Charlie, No I'm not a lawyer and we are ALL English teachers. Paragraph 1. hard to disagree with. The 'Starbucks' point is probably the same issue as libraries across the board. Is borrowing a mag from a library and 'using' one of the articles (making a turnout for example) fair dealing. You decide; for me' the magazine being usually unavailable by then, it is fair dealing to buy the next issue. This way the publisher gets a sale. You mentioned lawyers; I believe the issues surrounding loaning institutions are fraught. When helping older dyslexic kids with texts they should never have been set, it often helps to scan/photocopy or whatever, a long out of print article. The student is often crushed, flat exhausted, and seriously at risk; no publisher is likely to be worried. Judgement is needed whether or not chasing up copyright holders is trifling with everyone's time; sometimes an apology is easier than permission. Setting an example matters: in one such case I copied an entire commentary on Shakespeare's Macbeth, but I got permission: permission, and that was permission was ENTHUSIASTICALLY given. All this is a far cry from photography in a quiet corner of a store. It is all about judgement and fair dealing. We turn to the art world to help conceptualise issues. On the meaning of law, I have found Robert Bolt's 'A Man for all Seasons' a good precis. To be sure, there is much else besides riddling the text, and riddling the text, but it's underlining of the meaning of law is superb. And (AAHHH!!! I started a sentence with a conjunctivitis) as for the convolutions of 'AI' and the somewhat lesser convolutions of more down to Earth cases (let's give Mother Earth a capital) here is a quote. It points to something important but not without tension: "When we die, and you are sent to heaven for doing your conscience, and I am sent to hell for not doing mine, will you come with me, for fellowship?" A Man for All Seasons Here is one I have never forgotten. It is about weakening (hopefully just) laws as in your point on music: "And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned around on you--where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country's planted thick with laws from coast to coast--man's laws, not God's--and if you cut them down... d'you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then?" Robert Bolt: 'A Man for all Seasons'. We better be careful mate; we might trip over a real lawyer or a real English teacher! I'm not game to comb this for inconsistencies. The efforts of you and others on these channels is appreciated. I trust my efforts are of some help. Both of us should be banned from 'the' word processor! Gotta go.

    In South Africa, we used to get these magazines, how ever since the increase in the cost of living, we no longer get them at all. There was a time when you coul see a whole bunch of people in a news agent reading the magazines in the store, if they liked the aricle in the magazines where to their liking they would purchase the magazine and read it again at home. Eventualy thes magazines became almost as expensive as a tank of petrol for the car. The magazine was considered as a luxury item and people would just read the magazines in the shop. The shop the dropped bringing the magazines into the country because the magazines were not being purchased. Eventually, the news agent went into business rescue and closed its doors permanently. Today, if you want the magazines, getting an internet copy sent to your email address is the option. However, these electronic copies will be shared amongst friends. 1/2 the magazines are adverts which the average South African does not read or have any interest. The model railway community in South Africa is so small it can not even support a local magazine. If the local libraries did bring in some magazines, it would be nice, but the local libraries are struggling to keep the doors open.

    You tell people how to steal content from printed magazines by photographing pages from the magazine and then returning the magazine to the shelves, or by paying for returned expired magazines, but then complain that the quality of printed magazines is falling in paper quality and detail in the articles. If people don’t pay for magazines, then of course the quality of magazines is going to drop.

    I used to buy all 4 of the main UK magazines every month, but got fed up with with the lack of interesting content, gone are the days when the clever modellers would convert a model into something totally different. These days it all seems to be all about how big your budget is and reviews of the latest class 37 or 47 from any of the major manufacturers. No actual modelling apart from cheque book modelling.

    • @charlie1872

      very true Ian, I see many modellers with multiple 37 &47’s. I don’t get it but each to their own. Whenever I attend a show which is not often here in Toronto, I always keep an eye out for old mags. The magazines now are for the most part repetitive . Thanks for taking the time to post this Ian Cheers Charlie

    I dont know if you have the same thing in Canada, but here in the UK there are a lot of markets here that deal in magazine returns. I regularly buy magazines that are a month out of date at 3 for a fiver. Some are even cheaper. They are intact no front covers removed😊

    Paper prices were going through the roof just after Covid .. the price was changing daily .. plus add on production costs I dread to think how much Hornby get charged for that full glossy cover .. and it’s not printed in one hit .. there are several processes to print that .. plus I think Hornby mag is what’s known as perfect bound ie all pages are glued to a spine unlike modle rail which I think is stitched with a staple .. in order to keep the price down modle rail have gone to a cheeper paper for the inside pages .. Hornby probably use a different heavier gram better quality papper .. also print , anything in print is a dying bread due to the internet.. ever since covid the print industry especially where I work has changed dramatically… with such fluctuations in prices it’s far easier to put your catalog online where it’s easier to change prices rather than a paper version which by the time you’ve printed it the prices may off changed so you have to do a print re run .. yes £5:44 and £5:75 is a bit expensive but there are other mags that are over a tenner ..!

      Hello James, good if you to drop a note on this topic and thanks for clarifying the situation in the printing business. I never gave a thought to the effect Covid might have had. We stopped taking the newspaper (The Toronto Star) as my wife said, “there is nothing in it now, filled with adverts”. Rings a bell You are also correct about the bookbinding too, an old friend of mine from school was a bookbinder, good paying job but long out of work. Another effect from technology. At least I can keep my Triang Hornby Locos running in spite of the technological change to the hobby 🤣🤣

    Don't forget that the Tories have been in power in the UK and totally mismanaging the UK economy. Exchange rates between the UK pound and other currencies around the world have been fluctuating madly, so sadly it's not surprising that UK exports are now much more expensive.

    • @davetedd3633
      @davetedd3633 14 днів тому

      Nonsense, the value of the £ (to Euro) is almost exactly the same now as when the Conservatives took office in 2010, with UK growth often outpacing our continental neighbours. If Labour get in, with their high borrowing, the value of the £ will likely fall. This could make it cheaper to buy British magazines abroad. Anyway, I take out trial subscriptions then cancel. Using topcashback you can often get the magazines effectively delivered for free! Online services such as readly are another way to go

  • @vickielawless
    @vickielawless 22 дні тому

    Totally agree, mags are not as good as 10 years ago but the price has shot up! Paper mags are a dying breed due to, yes, the internet. It's the same for any specialist hobby magazine- less content, higher price. There's a market stall near me that sells out of date mags for £1.50 each; a big saving on the £5.75 cover price..

  • @peterjackson-cheadleheath1182
    @peterjackson-cheadleheath1182 23 дні тому

    Hi Charlie I used to buy these mag's and most of the 'main players' in the railway modelling world, but now I only actually buy Model Rail but I do subscribe to BRM, mainly because I think those two are the best for the modelling content. I stopped buying Hornby Mag and Railway Modeller when the prices were hiked up (here in UK) about 18 months to 2 years ago and my BRM Subs are quite cheap as I got it when it was on a special offer. Although I do like to 'flick through' a proper magazine in the hands, rather than watch on a screen, but as ever storing the mags takes up space and every now and then I give some to a local preserved railway, instead of putting in the recycling bin. But the prices you are paying over in Canada do seem very dear to me, even with the cost of getting them there. Thanks

    I`ve not bought a Magazine since the 90s, I`ll guess the people that buy glossy mags are dwindeling and there moving it it to online content, With a few pieces to draw you in then it goes behind a pay wall. I used to get a US brewing magazine direct from the US for about £55 a year but it was 10 editions per year, but it was posted from the UK, so it came in bulk to a mailing company, who done the subs for 100s of mags sometimes at better prices than the mag itself, so that might be an option to save a few $$££ but no good for the Odd purchase.

    • @charlie1872

      I think it is much the same gere as the mags are delivered to the shops via a publishing/handling company. I guess it is all about cutting costs, we no longer take a newspaper as everything is online. Thanks for taking the time to post your opinion. Cheers

    Hi, thanks for the video. I've stopped buying these magazines now. For me, they've become an advertising and selling ground with very little or few articles of interest - more ads than articles. Compared with 10 years ago these magazines have lost something. Spending this amount of money for so little of interest to me makes them a 'no go' as far as I'm concerned - especially when there are videos available on-line for free. I live on a pension these days so myself and my wife have to be careful where our money goes. That's my opinion anyway. Thanks again for your video.

      Hi Alfie, thanks for taking the time to comment. I am much the same, I no longer or very rarely buy these magazines and have always complained about the lack of interesting content. The answer is always the same- without adverts we cannot turn a profit. I couldn’t agree more about the difference in content from earlier published magazines and think they dropped the ball when they began leaning toward manufacturers. Like yourself I watch a lot of UA-cam and the about of information available is phenomenal, on any subject, so much that I have been able to fix a few appliances around the house as opposed to spending hundreds of dollars. Thank God for men in sheds. I really appreciate you taking the time to comment. Cheers Charlie

    Great stuff Charlie and thanks for the shout out. Great job and more like wood now. The difference between Contrast and Shade with the Games Workshop paint is at the molecular level. Hi bob, thanks for posting this. I gave a brass gauge and I believe I checked them at one point but will again. What I find problematic is the old plastic wheels tend to bob about as do the trailing bogie. I put this down to them not having a spring or weight to assist however, I do recall seeing one somewhere. This often results in a derailment. I. use consult Vol1 of the Triang books.
